Accra, May 15, 2026 – FactSpace West Africa has formally been admitted into the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Alliance, joining a network of over 300 organizations and 200 individual experts from over 100 countries.

UNESCO describes the alliance as “a global network of organizations and individuals committed to advancing policies, strategies, and practices that strengthen MIL worldwide.”

A correspondence from UNESCO sent to FactSpace this week read in part: “Congratulations! We are delighted to inform you that your application from FactSpace West Africa to join the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance (MIL Alliance) has been successfully completed and approved by UNESCO.”

FactSpace editor, Alfa Shaban, underlined the importance of joining the Alliance and how it would bolster the work the organization is already doing in the media literacy area.

“Now we have an extra boost to deepen our MIL advocacy through the work we do in our daily reporting and also through the training that we deploy to members of the Ghana Fact-Checking Network and to partner institutions,” he said.

“Indeed, being part of this Alliance also means we get more exposure in exchange of knowledge, research, communication, and good practices, from across the world,” Alfa added.

According to UNESCO, since the inception of the MIL Alliance, it has fostered international cooperation to promote society-wide access to MIL competencies, helping communities become more resilient to disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech.

Our MIL footprints at FactSpace West Africa

At FactSpace, our MIL footprints spans publications on our websites – ghanafact.com and factspace.org with dedicated Media Literacy Tab on the FactSpace website.

MIL topics have also formed part of our radio show, The Fact Space, a 30-minute weekly programme that airs on Radio Univers, a station run by the University of Ghana (UG) Department of Communication Studies.

We have also rolled out MIL programmes to coincide with Ghana’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) which is commemorated in October each year.

MIL topics are also embedded into training programmes that we have undertaken over the years across Ghana and with partners across our focal countries – The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Liberia.
