Accra, April 29, 2026 — FactSpace West Africa participated in a regional media training and capacity-building workshop titled: “Enhancing Media Capacity on Foreign Influence, Geopolitics, and Democracy Resilience in West Africa and the Sahel.”

The two day workshop, organized by Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), took place between April 28–29, 2026, at The Palms Hotel in Accra. It brought together journalists, editors, and media practitioners from across West Africa to strengthen reporting on geopolitical developments, foreign influence, and democratic governance.

Executive Director of FactSpace West Africa, Rabiu Alhassan, contributed to the programme and led a breakout discussion focused on the theme: “How media institutions can adapt to geopolitical, technological, and economic pressures.”

The session highlighted three key priorities for media resilience in the region:

  • adopting a stronger cross-border approach to reporting in response to evolving geopolitical dynamics;
  • leveraging emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in ways that support—rather than replace—journalistic work while strengthening digital security practices; and
  • addressing economic sustainability through quality journalism, diversified business models, and public trust, while safeguarding editorial independence in any government or institutional partnerships.

Rabiu emphasized the importance of a regional lens, noting that “journalists in West Africa should not limit their scope to national borders. Geopolitical dynamics, like disinformation, are inherently transnational and require an international approach—just as fact-checking initiatives like FactSpace operate across borders.”

Aside from Rabiu, Lara Zofio, an intern with FactSpace West Africa also participated in the training. Lara joined FactSpace in April 2026 as part of the Mundus Journalism Internship. She is currently studying as part of the Erasmus Mundus Journalism: Cultures and Contexts specialization with Aarhus University & LMU Munich.

The workshop forms part of ongoing regional efforts by CDD-Ghana to build a network of media professionals equipped to report critically and accurately on complex geopolitical and governance issues. It also aims to lay the foundation for continued collaboration and knowledge-sharing across borders.
