Accra – September 14, 2026 –  FactSpace West Africa participated in a five-day workshop focused on Gender-Sensitive Reporting.

The workshop,  organized by DW Akademie Ghana, took place from September 7 – 11, 2026 at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.

The workshop brought together media practitioners from across the Greater Accra, Eastern and Central Regions to learn about how to report gender issues responsibly, and evaluate newsroom practices that reinforce biases and stereotypes.

Research associate at FactSpace, Gifty Danso who represented the organization at the workshop said the training has taught that beyond addressing ethical principles in gender sensitive reporting, journalists can make society better by reporting gender issues through a solutions lens.

“As journalists in the 21st Century, we should be gravitating towards stories that challenge pre-existing worldviews and evaluating the practices we have maintained over the years in reporting gender issues. Going forward, this will inform how I report stories with gender angles,” she said.

Workshop sessions

During the five days, participants were first introduced to key concepts such as gender mainstreaming, gender stereotypes, the forms of bias in journalism and why gender-sensitive reporting matters.

The more practical aspects of the training introduced journalists to how to report gender issues through Solutions Journalism. Participants were also taken through the choice of images for stories and the use of gender-sensitive language throughout the reporting process.

They were also introduced to the 50:50 workflow, a concept adopted by media organisations such as the BBC and DW to promote greater inclusion and diversity in their content and reporting.

According to the facilitator, Sheila Mysorekar, the BBC noticed an increase in the number of young women tuning in to its programmes after implementing the 50:50 project in 2017.

The five-day workshop, held under the EU-funded African Media Integrity and Resilience (AMIR) Programme, was facilitated by Sheila Mysorekar and Isaac Kaledzi, both of DW.
